GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB. In Europe and the UK it’s PEGI 18, in Germany USK 18 and in Australia R18+: an adult rating on every board. The descriptors cover blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong sexual content, drugs and alcohol, strong language and in-game purchases. Here’s what each rating flags, and what it means for a teenager’s PS5 account.

USKGermany18Drastic violence, drugs, criminal role models, in-game purchasesConfirmed

Germany’s USK files it under “keine Jugendfreigabe,” no youth rating, and dates its test to October 13, 2026. In Australia, the Classification Board’s database entry for the game reads R18+ for high impact violence, sex scenes and drug use. It’s dated August 27, 2026 and filed in the “demonstration” category.

What the ESRB M rating covers

The ESRB listing for Grand Theft Auto VI names seven content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It’s the exact set on GTA V’s current-gen listing for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. Same letter, same seven flags.

Two things differ. GTA V’s page carries a long rating summary that walks through an “intense and prolonged” interrogation sequence (pipe wrench, tooth removal, electrocution), the sex acts and the slurs in its dialogue. As of November 1, the GTA VI page only carries the one-line summary. And GTA V lists Users Interact as an interactive element. GTA VI doesn’t, which squares with Rockstar’s Newswire calling it “a single player experience” at launch.

Both carry In-Game Purchases. On a single-player game, that notice doesn’t say what’s for sale, so read it as the rating board’s minimum disclosure, not a confirmed store. Our GTA 6 microtransactions breakdown covers what Rockstar has actually said.

What PEGI’s pulled summary revealed

PEGI posted a full content description alongside its 18 rating, then pulled the detailed text from its site shortly after, as Video Games Chronicle reported. That text, quoted by VGC and Push Square, is the most detailed outside look at the game so far:

  • Violence: “bloody with a high degree of realism,” with some weapons able to cause “detailed decapitation and dismemberment.” Civilians, criminals and police can all be harmed.
  • Drugs: “frequent and prominent.” Drugs sit in an inventory slot, and “cocaine can be carried around by the player and snorted directly from their hand at any time.”
  • Sex: nudity, “scenes of intercourse and occasional scenes of sexual fetishes.” In nightclubs, the player can pay for private dances and move their hands onto the dancers’ breasts and buttocks.
  • Animals: domestic animals can be harmed, without the injury detail applied to humans.
  • Language: f*ck and c*nt, plus discriminatory language in the in-game TV shows and radio stations.

Because PEGI pulled the page, treat its specifics as Reported, not Confirmed. It covers the same ground as the ESRB on violence, sex, drugs and language.

From Hot Coffee to open descriptors

Rockstar has history here. Hot Coffee, the sex minigame dug out of GTA San Andreas’ code after its 2004 release, brought what VGC calls “intense legal backlash” and an FTC warning. Two decades later, the sex content isn’t hidden in the files: it’s printed on the rating page weeks before launch, and it still fits inside the same M that GTA V got.

Is GTA 6 OK for a teenager?

The ESRB’s answer is 17 and up, and nothing in the descriptors is borderline. If you’re weighing it for a 13 or 15-year-old, the useful tools are on the console, not the box.

On PS5, it takes four steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management on the console, or open the PlayStation Family app.
  2. Pick the child’s account and set its Age Level for Games. Sony’s preset levels (Child, Early Teens, Late Teens or Older) only let a PS5 game start “if the age rating is the same or lower than the child’s age,” so an M-rated game won’t launch on a younger account.
  3. Handle exceptions: a child can request one for a specific game, and the parent can allow it.
  4. Set a Monthly Spending Limit and, if needed, restrict communication and user-generated content.

If you live in the UK, there’s a separate question about proving your own age on PlayStation: see our GTA 6 age verification explainer.

FAQ

What is GTA 6 rated?

M for Mature 17+ in the US and Canada (ESRB), 18 in Europe and the UK (PEGI), 18 in Germany (USK, "keine Jugendfreigabe") and R18+ in Australia. It's an adult rating everywhere: 17+ from the ESRB, 18 on the other boards.

Is GTA 6 rated AO (Adults Only)?

No. The ESRB gave it an M for Mature 17+, the same letter and the same seven content descriptors as GTA V's current listing. Adults Only is the ESRB's next tier up, and GTA VI didn't get it.

Does GTA 6 have nudity?

Yes. Nudity and Strong Sexual Content are both on the ESRB listing, and the pulled PEGI summary described scenes of intercourse and strip clubs where the player can pay for private dances. Australia's board cites "sex scenes" by name.

Can a 13-year-old play GTA 6?

The ESRB says 17 and up. On a PS5 child account, the preset restriction levels only let a game start if its age rating is at or below the child's age, so GTA 6 stays locked for a child under 17 (under 18 where PEGI applies). A parent can still grant an exception for a specific game: that's a call for the family, not the console.

That's the paperwork done before November 19. Alfred, GTA Zone.
