What is the best GTA Online update? Over twelve years, Rockstar has stacked up dozens of them, all free, from the original Heists of March 2015 to the Kortz Center heist of summer 2026. As the mode enters its twilight before Grand Theft Auto VI, we’re ranking the seven updates that shaped its history the most. Our yardstick: legacy, not profit alone.

Twelve years after its October 2013 launch, GTA Online is still running at nearly ten million weekly active players. It’s that extraordinary longevity we’re celebrating here, tracing back through the updates that shaped it.

How we ranked these updates

We didn’t rank by the wallet. For raw returns, our best heists ranking and our most profitable businesses ranking already do the job. Here, we weighed three things. Legacy first: what the update permanently changed about how you play. Boldness next: the new mechanic or content, the idea nobody saw coming. Cultural impact last: the buzz, the community life, the memories that stick. An update can rake in cash without leaving a mark, and the reverse is just as true.

The Cayo Perico Heist (December 2020)

The single best addition in the mode's history. Released on December 15, 2020, the Cayo Perico heist did two things no update had dared to try: it delivered the first major heist playable entirely solo, from scoping the target to the final sale, and the game's first map expansion, an entire private island off the coast of Los Santos. Unlocked through the Kosatka submarine, it became the go-to money machine for solo players and reshaped the mode's economy, as we break down in our Cayo Perico solo guide. A total turning point.

Los Santos Tuners (July 2021)

The most beloved lifestyle update. On July 20, 2021, Los Santos Tuners opened the LS Car Meet, a huge social warehouse in Cypress Flats where you show off your rides, race and hang out with no wanted level, in a reputation space all its own. With its seventeen tuner cars, its test track, its new races and the Auto Shop, this is the update that turned GTA Online into a car-culture paradise. A hangout as much as a DLC.

The Diamond Casino & Resort (July 2019)

Six years of waiting on a locked door. On July 23, 2019, the most famous casino in Los Santos finally opened its doors with The Diamond Casino & Resort: roulette, blackjack, three-card poker, slot machines and horse racing all wagered with in-game money, plus a customizable luxury penthouse and the storyline against the Duggans, a Texan petrochemical family bent on seizing the place. The casino was divisive (virtual gambling, chips), but it turned the north of the map into a genuine pocket-sized Vegas. A few months later, it would serve as the backdrop for the Diamond Casino Heist.

After Hours (July 2018)

After dark, GTA Online turns into a club. Released on July 24, 2018, After Hours introduced player-run nightclubs, a passive-income business built on top of a warehouse, all overseen by Tony Prince, the Gay Tony of The Ballad of Gay Tony. The stroke of genius is the soundtrack: Rockstar brought in real world-famous DJs, Solomun, Tale Of Us, Dixon and The Black Madonna, as residents, with their exclusive sets on the Los Santos Underground radio station. A first-of-its-kind bridge between video games and the electronic music scene.

The Contract (December 2021)

The triumphant return of a GTA V hero. On December 15, 2021, The Contract brought back Franklin Clinton, now the boss of the F. Clinton & Partner agency, backed by Lamar, Chop the dog and Imani the hacker. The through line: recover Dr. Dre's stolen phone, loaded with unreleased tracks. The payoff: six new exclusive Dr. Dre songs added to the game and a genuine story-driven campaign that stitched GTA Online back to GTA V's single-player. The Heists (March 2015)

Without them, none of the rest exists. Promised at the mode's 2013 launch, the Heists took eighteen months to arrive, on March 10, 2015, but they laid down GTA Online's co-op DNA: five multi-stage jobs, from the modest Fleeca Job to the legendary Pacific Standard Job, played four-up, with role assignments, setup missions and Elite Challenges for the boldest crews. Lester Crest calls the shots, coordination does the rest. This is the foundational building block Rockstar built the following decade on.

The Doomsday Heist (December 2017)

The most spectacular heist ever built for the mode. On December 12, 2017, The Doomsday Heist tipped GTA Online into a sci-fi action blockbuster: three scripted acts to foil a doomsday plot, a rogue AI, an orbital cannon, submarines, jetpacks and the Khanjali stealth tank, all run out of underground Facilities. What is the best GTA Online update?

For its legacy, it's The Cayo Perico Heist (December 2020). This heist introduced two major firsts: the first heist playable start to finish solo, from scoping the target to the final sale, and the game's first map expansion with the island of Cayo Perico. It permanently changed how you make money in GTA Online. Next come Los Santos Tuners and The Contract, which pushed the mode toward car culture and the return of GTA V's characters.

What was the first big GTA Online update?

The Heists, on March 10, 2015. Promised at the mode's 2013 launch, this update arrived eighteen months later and brought four-player co-op, with five multi-stage heists led by Lester Crest, from the Fleeca Job to the Pacific Standard Job. This is the DNA of GTA Online as we know it today.

What is the latest GTA Online update?

The Kortz Center heist, available since July 14, 2026. It's the summer 2026 update, and the gaming press frames it as the mode's last major content drop before GTA 6 arrives. Rockstar will keep maintaining the servers and running events, but no new big content block is expected.

Will there still be updates after GTA 6?

Nothing official on the big-expansion front. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has said he has every reason to believe GTA Online's support will continue after GTA 6 launches, but it will look more like maintenance and occasional events than themed DLC.
