Nine years after launch, the Smuggler’s Run Hangar is still the forgotten business of GTA Online. Too slow for grinders, too pricey for new players, but irreplaceable if you want to fly and customize planes. Here’s how it really works, what its five locations cost and what Air-Freight Cargo pays in 2026.

Smuggler’s Run turns nine

It’s a quiet anniversary: Grand Theft Auto Online: Smuggler’s Run came out on August 29, 2017, exactly nine years ago. The update opened the skies over Los Santos and Blaine County to organized crime, with a new base of operations, the Hangar, and a matching business, Air-Freight Cargo, run by everyone’s favorite paranoid, Nervous Ron.

Back then, the update brought seven new aircraft, from a vintage dogfighter to a Cold War bomber, a free Cuban 800 with your hangar, an aircraft workshop to bolt on guns, bombs, countermeasures and liveries, and more than 300 clothing items. It also introduced Motor Wars, an Adversary Mode that plays like a vehicular battle royale. More on that below.

The Hangar: an air base for smugglers

You buy a Hangar on the Maze Bank Foreclosures website from your phone’s browser, choosing from five locations. Two are at Los Santos International Airport, three at the Fort Zancudo military base. They all unlock the same business, so the only thing that really matters is where they sit relative to your source routes.

HangarBase price
LSIA Hangar A17 (cheapest)GTA$1,200,000
Fort Zancudo Hangar 3497 (most central)GTA$2,085,000

Fort Zancudo 3497 is the usual pick in guides, thanks to its location and how close it is to the runway. The downside: it’s a military base, and if you walk out on foot, the army will be on you in seconds. The airport hangars are cheaper and much calmer on the ground.

On the customization side, you can add an aircraft workshop staffed by mechanic Charlie Reed, plus flooring style, lighting, office decor and living quarters. Beyond cargo, the hangar doubles as an aircraft garage: it holds up to 20 personal aircraft, which you can request as personal vehicles from the Interaction Menu.

How Air-Freight Cargo works

Register as a CEO, VIP or MC President, head to the hangar office and start a source mission from the Free Trade Shipping Co. computer. The very first one is mandatory: steal a Mogul guarded by the Lost MC. After that, the regular mission rotation opens up.

The big difference from classic Special Cargo: sourcing is free. You don’t buy the cargo, you steal it, so every sale is pure profit minus Ron’s cut. The hangar holds up to 50 crates, each worth GTA$30,000 base. The key thing to remember: it’s not the type of goods that changes a crate’s value, it’s keeping your stock uniform. Fill all 50 slots with one single cargo type and you unlock a +70% bonus.

When selling, go with the land option: solo, it always uses just one delivery vehicle. The air option picks a random mission that can involve several aircraft and multiple drop zones, which is sometimes impossible alone. A small perk for the deep-pocketed: owning Higgins Helitours adds +10% to your cargo’s value during hangar sales.

How much it pays, and who it’s for

Let’s be honest about the money. GTA Boss puts solo earnings at GTA$350,000 to GTA$600,000 per hour, with a real spike during double-money weeks. The ceiling is that full single-type stock at GTA$2,550,000, which climbs to GTA$3,825,000 in a busy public lobby thanks to the High Demand bonus.

The payout isn’t the problem. Getting there is. Solo, a source mission usually nets you just one crate, so filling all 50 slots takes around fifty runs. With a crew, everyone brings back cargo on the same mission, and a hangar fills up much faster. For quick solo money, the Acid Lab or the Cayo Perico Heist solo are still more efficient, and our rundown of the best businesses in GTA Online shows how they all stack up.

So who is it actually worth it for? Two kinds of players. Crews, who turn the grind into a group hunt. And above all, aviation fans: the Hangar is still the only way to store, repair and arm a whole fleet, from fighter jets to bombers, and pull it out on demand. If flying is your thing, check out our ranking of the best planes and helicopters: most of them fit right in a hangar. For passive income while you play something else, the Nightclub is still king.

Staff member Rooster McCraw gives impatient players an out: for GTA$25,000 per trip, he sources crates in the background. It’s a semi-passive trickle that doesn’t pay much per run but keeps going while you do something else.

Motor Wars and the rest of the package

Smuggler’s Run wasn’t just a business. The update also added Motor Wars, an Adversary Mode where up to 28 players, split into teams, battle it out in a shrinking zone with weaponized vehicles dropped in by parachute. A GTA take on vehicular battle royale, well before the genre blew up everywhere.

The official trailer from back then sums up the update’s ambition nicely: turning the sky into a full-blown criminal playground.

A business worth considering, not ignoring

The Hangar will never knock the Acid Lab off the top of the hourly earnings chart, and that’s not what it’s built for. It’s an aviation base with a solid business attached: free to source, very decent once full, genuinely good with a crew. If you’re just starting out and stacking your first millions, you’re better off beginning with safer bets, as our GTA Online beginner’s guide explains.

That leaves the question hanging over all these businesses: what happens to them once the next game launches? We dig into it in our look at the future of GTA Online after GTA 6, due out on its November 19, 2026 release date. Until then, the skies over Los Santos are still wide open for smugglers.

FAQ

How much does a Hangar cost in GTA Online?

All five hangars are sold on the Maze Bank Foreclosures website, ranging from about GTA$1,200,000 for the cheapest (Hangar A17 at Los Santos International Airport) to about GTA$2,085,000 for Fort Zancudo Hangar 3497, often recommended for its central location. Upgrades come on top: aircraft workshop, style, lighting and living quarters. Besides cargo, the hangar can store up to 20 personal aircraft.

How does the Air-Freight Cargo business work?

Register as a CEO, VIP or MC President, then start missions from the Free Trade Shipping Co. computer in your hangar. The first mission is always stealing a Mogul guarded by the Lost MC. After that, you steal crates (sourcing is free) until you have up to 50 in stock, then sell them in a sell mission with a 20-minute time limit. Nervous Ron takes a 5% cut per crate.

How much does the Hangar make per hour?

Solo, expect roughly GTA$350,000 to GTA$600,000 per hour according to GTA Boss, and more during double-money weeks. A full stock of 50 crates of a single type sells for GTA$2,550,000 thanks to the +70% bonus, and up to GTA$3,825,000 in a busy public lobby with the High Demand bonus. That's a decent return, but stockpiling crates takes a long time solo.

Is the Hangar worth it solo in 2026?

Yes, but it's a business you can run alone rather than one built for solo play. One crate per run, about fifty runs to fill the hangar: the grind is real. Sourcing is free, so every sale is pure profit, and staff member Rooster McCraw can source crates semi-passively for GTA$25,000 per trip. For fast solo income, the Acid Lab or the Cayo Perico Heist are still more efficient.

Should I buy the Fort Zancudo Hangar or an airport one?

Fort Zancudo (Hangar 3497) is the most central option and the closest to source mission routes, which makes it the usual pick in guides. The catch: it's a military base, so on foot you'll set off the army fast. The Los Santos International Airport hangars are cheaper and safer on the ground. Both give you access to the same business.
