GTA Motorcycles in Real Life: The Real Bikes Behind Them

Yes, GTA’s motorcycles really are based on real machines. But you’ll never see a badged Ducati or Harley in the game: Rockstar invents its own manufacturers, which parody the real ones, and often blends several bikes into one. Here are the most solid matches, from the Hayabusa to the comedy scooter, the myths that keep making the rounds (no, the Shotaro isn’t the Akira bike) and the bikes already spotted in GTA VI.

Why GTA has no real motorcycle brands

It’s exactly the same story as the real cars behind GTA’s vehicles: a matter of rights as much as common sense. Licenses are expensive, and no manufacturer wants to see its bike stolen at a red light, wrapped around a pole or used to shake the cops, which is, after all, a big part of GTA. By creating fictional brands like Shitzu, Pegassi or Western, Rockstar gives itself two kinds of freedom: lampooning motorcycle culture its own way, and abusing the machines without answering to anyone. The upshot: every bike is a mashup of several real models, never a carbon copy.

The sportbikes: Bati, Hakuchou and PCJ-600

This is the easiest category to read, and the one people ride most. The Shitzu PCJ-600 is the veteran: it has been around since Vice City, then San Andreas and the two PSP entries, before its HD-era redesign. Its real-world model, though, is up for debate: GTA Base ties the GTA V version to the Honda CB600F Hornet, while gta.wiki sees a blend of the Suzuki Bandit 600, the Honda CB400SF and the Ducati Monster. A textbook Rockstar mashup. The Pegassi Bati 801 is the game’s Italian superbike, modeled on the Ducati 848 with a few touches from its big sister, the 1098. It started life as the Bati 800 in The Lost and Damned, the first GTA IV episode, before picking up an extra digit in GTA V.

But the real star is the Shitzu Hakuchou, which also debuted in the GTA IV episodes. It’s a take on the second-generation Suzuki Hayabusa, a faired hyperbike built for top speed. The nod is brilliant: Hakuchou means swan in Japanese, echoing the name Hayabusa, the peregrine falcon. Suzuki picked that name in 1999 because the falcon hunts blackbirds, a direct jab at the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird it set out to dethrone. Rockstar pushed the tribute all the way, borrowing that Honda’s headlights and seat and swapping the falcon kanji painted on the Hayabusa’s flanks for the kanji 死, death. Johnny Klebitz, for his part, sums it all up his own way in The Lost and Damned: he admits he doesn’t know how to pronounce the name.

The American customs: Western plays Harley

The vibe changes completely with Western Motorcycle Company, GTA’s Harley-Davidson. This is the brand of chromed-out choppers and cruisers, long forks and ape hangers, with borrowings from Indian, West Coast Choppers and ARCH Motorcycle. The Western Bagger takes after a 2013 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Custom, with a tank that leans more toward Victory. The Daemon, the Lost MC’s ride, riffs on Harley’s FX series, and the Sovereign on the Road King. Right next door, Liberty City Cycles (LCC), which came from the GTA IV episodes, plays the custom shop in the style of Orange County Choppers and West Coast Choppers: its Hexer is a pure shop-built chopper.

That motorcycle club culture got its own update: GTA Online: Bikers, released on October 4, 2016. It brought MCs to Los Santos and Blaine County, with clubhouses, illegal businesses and a fleet of new bikes, from choppers to sportbikes.

Dirt bikes, scooters and anime bikes

Off the pavement, the king is still the Maibatsu Sanchez, around since Vice City and in every HD-era GTA. Its silhouette draws on the genre’s Japanese benchmarks, somewhere between the Honda CRF450X, the Yamaha YZ450F and the Kawasaki KX450F. For rally raid, the Nagasaki BF400 takes after the KTM 450 Rally. At the opposite extreme, the Pegassi Faggio is the game’s Piaggio Vespa, and a real snail, topping out at about 56 mph (90 km/h) according to the game files pulled by GTA Base; it has also been around since Vice City.

That leaves one myth that’s everywhere, including in the first version of this article: the Nagasaki Shotaro is not Kaneda’s bike from Akira. Added to GTA Online on November 8, 2016 with the Deadline update, a month after Bikers, it mostly borrows from the Lotus C-01 and the Light Cycle from Tron: Legacy, hence its glowing bodywork and same-size wheels. Akira gives it its name, Shotaro being Kaneda’s first name, plus a few details like the circular wheel covers, which bring it closer to Kaneda’s bike once it’s painted red. Before it, the nod went through the Dinka Vindicator, modeled on the Honda NM4 Vultus. Honda says manga inspired the NM4, without officially billing it as Kaneda’s bike, and the game slyly describes the Vindicator as an “anime-infected” tourer.

The other GTA Online bikes, decoded

Beyond the icons, the GTA Online garage hides dozens of bikes with clearly identified inspirations. Here are the ones GTA Base’s vehicle pages tie to a real model, along with the detail that matters.

As for which ones are actually worth the money once you’re in the saddle, that comes down to speed, handling and value for money, and the rankings shift with every GTA Online update.

GTA’s motorcycle brands, decoded

Once you know the decoder key, the whole lineup falls into place. Shitzu is the game’s Suzuki, with the Hakuchou and the PCJ-600, even if a few models lean toward Honda or Kawasaki. Pegassi mixes Lamborghini and Pagani on the car side and Ducati on the bike side: a delicious coincidence, since Lamborghini bought Ducati in 2012, four years after Pegassi showed up in GTA IV. Principe, the other Italian, plays on noble titles: its name points to Ducati, which evokes a duchy in Italian. Dinka is the Honda of two-wheelers, from the Akuma to the Double-T. Western stands in for Harley-Davidson, Nagasaki for Kawasaki (both named after Japanese cities), and Maibatsu, a blend of Mitsubishi and zaibatsu, covers motocross. Spotting the fictional brand is still the fastest way to guess the real model, exactly like with the cars.

Bikes already spotted in GTA 6

Grand Theft Auto VI hasn’t released its official vehicle list yet, but fans have already pinned down several motorcycles in Rockstar’s footage, cataloged by gta.wiki. In the first trailer, a red Double-T is parked next to a black Nagasaki Carbon RS on Shore Drive in Vice Beach, while a pack of Sanchez bikes tears through alongside Blazer ATVs. A yellow Double-T shows up again in An Extended Look, surrounded by several Alvino V1s, and the Faggio makes the cut too.

The real newcomer is precisely the Principe Alvino V1, a brand-new sportbike that gta.wiki identified from the very first official screenshots: Jason poses next to a green one with a worn livery stamped with the number 76. gta.wiki mainly sees a Ducati Panigale V2 in it, with Aprilia RS660 headlights. Makes sense: Principe is an Italian brand whose name points to Ducati.

For choppers, the trail leads to Ambrosia. In an official screenshot of the region, the local motorcycle club, the Final Chapter MC, rides in formation, and gta.wiki identifies a Western Sovereign 107, heir to the Road King-style Sovereign. In another screenshot, a biker wears a Liberty City Cycles cap, so LCC will be back. The names still need to be confirmed at launch, but the logic hasn’t changed, and Rockstar is bringing back its in-house manufacturers for the GTA 6 vehicle lineup.
