A Rhino tank loose in the middle of Portland, the full arsenal in eight button presses, $250,000 in one move: GTA Liberty City Stories has its cheat codes, and they’ve aged remarkably well since the game hit PSP in October 2005. Here’s the complete list, valid on both PSP and PS2, along with the pitfalls to know before you turn Liberty City into your personal playground.

How to enter a cheat in GTA Liberty City Stories

No keyboard here: Liberty City Stories never came out on PC, so there are no letter cheats like GUNSGUNSGUNS. Everything runs through 8-button combos, entered during gameplay, without pausing and fairly quickly. Most cheats display a confirmation message.

The detail that saves you time: the combos are identical on PSP and PS2. The PSP only has two shoulder buttons, L and R, and every cheat is built around them. The June 2006 PS2 port kept them as-is by mapping them to L1 and R1: no combo uses L2 or R2. So in the tables below, read L = L1 and R = R1 if you’re playing on PS2.

Two classic mistakes on PSP: using the analog nub instead of the D-pad (the directions won’t register), or hunting for L1/R1 buttons that the handheld simply doesn’t have.

Weapon, money and health cheats

All three weapon sets follow the same pattern: Up, button twice, Down, Left, button twice, Right. Only the button changes.

EffectCombo (PSP; on PS2, L = L1 and R = R1)
Weapon set 1Up, Square, Square, Down, Left, Square, Square, Right
Weapon set 2Up, Circle, Circle, Down, Left, Circle, Circle, Right
Weapon set 3Up, X, X, Down, Left, X, X, Right
Adds $250,000L, R, Triangle, L, R, Circle, L, R
Full healthL, R, X, L, R, Square, L, R
Full armorL, R, Circle, L, R, X, L, R
Commit suicideL, Down, Left, R, X, Circle, Up, Triangle

What each set contains: set 1 gives you brass knuckles, a knife, Molotov cocktails, a pistol, a shotgun, a Tec-9, an AK-47, a flamethrower and a sniper rifle; set 2 steps up to a katana, remote grenades, the .357, a sawed-off shotgun, the Micro SMG, the M4, a rocket launcher and the laser-sighted sniper rifle; set 3 breaks out the chainsaw, grenades, the .357, the SPAS-12, the MP5, the M4, the laser-sighted sniper and, above all, the minigun. Entering a set again refills your ammo.

The money cheat comes straight from GTA III, which Liberty City Stories is a prequel to: just like IFIWEREARICHMAN in the GTA 3 cheats, it pays out $250,000, and you can repeat it as often as you like. The full list, however, has no god mode and no infinite ammo. The health cheat only fills your bar once, but it has a little-known bonus: if Toni is driving, it also repairs the vehicle’s engine and tires, though it won’t fix the dented bodywork.

Police and weather cheats

EffectCombo (PSP)
Raise wanted level (+2 stars)L, R, Square, L, R, Triangle, L, R
Never wantedL, L, Triangle, R, R, X, Square, Circle
Sunny weatherL, L, Circle, R, R, Square, Triangle, X
Clear weatherUp, Down, Circle, Up, Down, Square, L, R
OvercastUp, Down, X, Up, Down, Triangle, L, R
RainUp, Down, Square, Up, Down, Circle, L, R
FogUp, Down, Triangle, Up, Down, X, L, R
Faster clockL, L, Left, L, L, Right, Circle, X

A word of warning about “Never wanted”: it doesn’t just wipe your stars, it blocks any new wanted level until you reload a save. Handy for cruising around, but it can get in the way of some missions. Its opposite adds two stars per input, up to the maximum of six.

Vehicle and traffic cheats

EffectCombo (PSP)
Spawn a Rhino tankL, L, Left, L, L, Right, Triangle, Circle
Spawn a garbage truck (Trashmaster)Triangle, Circle, Down, Triangle, Circle, Up, L, L
Destroy all vehiclesL, L, Left, L, L, Right, X, Square
Cars drive on waterCircle, X, Down, Circle, X, Up, L, L
Perfect traction (Down makes the car jump)L, Up, Left, R, Triangle, Circle, Down, X
Change motorcycle tire sizeCircle, Right, X, Up, Right, X, L, Square
Chrome vehiclesTriangle, R, L, Down, Down, R, R, Triangle
Black trafficCircle, Circle, R, Triangle, Triangle, L, Square, Square
White trafficX, X, R, Circle, Circle, L, Triangle, Triangle
All green lightsTriangle, Triangle, R, Square, Square, L, X, X
Aggressive driversSquare, Square, R, X, X, L, Circle, Circle

The Rhino is still the star of the show; spawn it somewhere with plenty of room. But the most fun cheat might be perfect traction: on top of gluing your car to the road, it lets you make it jump with a tap of Down, perfect for stunt-hopping over Staunton Island traffic jams. The chrome cheat, meanwhile, has a funny side effect spotted by gta.wiki: it also chromes the windows of the police helicopter, planes in flight and the subway.

Pedestrian cheats and wacky cheats

EffectCombo (PSP)
Pedestrian riotL, L, R, L, L, R, Left, Square
Pedestrians attack youL, L, R, L, L, R, Up, Triangle
Armed pedestriansR, R, L, R, R, L, Right, Circle
Some pedestrians follow youDown, Down, Down, Triangle, Triangle, Circle, L, R
Nearest pedestrian gets in your vehicleX, Square, Down, X, Square, Up, R, R
Play as a random pedestrianL, L, Left, L, L, Right, Square, Triangle
Big headsDown, Down, Down, Circle, Circle, X, L, R
Faster gameplayR, R, L, R, R, L, Down, X
Slower gameplayR, Triangle, X, R, Square, Circle, Left, Right
Media attention meterL, Up, Right, R, Triangle, Square, Down, X
Upside-down screen (version 1)Down, Down, Down, X, X, Square, R, L
Upside-down screen (version 2)X, X, X, Down, Down, Right, L, R
Show creditsL, R, L, R, Up, Down, L, R

Three cheats call for caution. The riot and pedestrians attack you cheats can’t be turned off mid-game, and pedestrians who follow you can stay glued to Toni: in all three cases, only reloading a clean save fixes the problem. The “play as a pedestrian” cheat swaps Toni for a random model, and chaining it several times can leave him stuck in place.

For the upside-down screen, Vandal lists a reset sequence for each version (Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Up, Up, Right, L, R for the first; Up, Up, Up, Triangle, Triangle, Square, R, L for the second), while gta.wiki and Grand Theft Wiki present the second combo as simply flipping the screen back. If the image stays flipped, reload.

The media attention meter is a quirk unique to this entry: it adds a gauge to the HUD that climbs as you spread chaos.

PSP-only multiplayer cheats

Liberty City Stories was the first 3D GTA playable on a handheld, and on PSP only it offered local Wi-Fi multiplayer for up to six players. Four cheats unlock its gangs and character models:

EffectCombo (PSP)
Unlock 25% of multiplayer contentUp, Up, Up, Square, Square, Triangle, R, L
Unlock 50% of multiplayer contentUp, Up, Up, Circle, Circle, X, L, R
Unlock 75% of multiplayer contentUp, Up, Up, X, X, Square, R, L
Unlock 100% of multiplayer contentUp, Up, Up, Triangle, Triangle, Circle, L, R

On PS2, these combos register but do nothing: the port never had multiplayer.

Cheats on the mobile version

The iOS (December 2015) and Android (February 2016) ports added dynamic lighting, HD textures and a longer draw distance, but the cheats are still built for physical buttons: gta.wiki only reports entering them with a controller connected to the phone, and with a big caveat. On mobile, the Rhino cheat doesn’t spawn the tank but other vehicles in rotation, and eventually crashes the game if you keep at it. Strictly for the curious.

Why Liberty City Stories is still worth cheating in

Developed by Rockstar Leeds with Rockstar North, Liberty City Stories is set in 1998 and follows Toni Cipriani’s return to the Leone family, three years before GTA III. The game topped 8 million copies by March 2008 and earned an 88 on Metacritic on PSP (78 on PS2). Its natural rival is its handheld sibling, Vice City Stories, the other half of Rockstar’s PSP duo.

FAQ

How do you enter cheat codes in GTA Liberty City Stories?

Input the full combo during gameplay, without pausing or opening a menu, and do it fairly quickly. Use the D-pad for Up, Down, Left and Right, never the PSP's analog nub. Most cheats display a confirmation message. There are no keyboard cheats to type: the game never came out on PC.

Are the cheats the same on PSP and PS2?

Yes. The single-player combos are identical on both systems: just swap L and R (the PSP's two shoulder buttons) for L1 and R1 on the PS2 controller. No combo uses L2 or R2. Only the four multiplayer unlock cheats are PSP-specific, since the PS2 version has no multiplayer mode.

Is there a money cheat in GTA Liberty City Stories?

Yes: L, R, Triangle, L, R, Circle, L, R on PSP (L1, R1, Triangle, L1, R1, Circle, L1, R1 on PS2). Each successful input adds $250,000, and you can repeat it. It isn't permanent infinite money, but a few inputs are enough to buy everything.

Is there a god mode in GTA Liberty City Stories?

No. The cheat list has no invincibility and no infinite ammo. The health cheat fills your bar once (and repairs the engine and tires of your vehicle if Toni is driving), and the armor cheat does the same for your vest. You'll need to enter them again as needed.

Can you use cheat codes on the mobile version?

gta.wiki only reports cheat input with a controller connected to the phone, using the PSP combos. With one quirk: the Rhino tank cheat spawns other vehicles instead, and eventually crashes the game if you keep at it.

What about GTA 6 cheat codes?

That's a different story, and we cover it separately: our dedicated GTA VI cheat codes article breaks down what we know and what the series' cheat history suggests.

The Rhino is waiting for you in Portland. Have fun, just do it on a separate save. Alfred, GTA Zone.
