Yes, you’ll take to the skies in GTA 6, and Rockstar has already put it right in front of us. A seaplane glides over the Keys, a private jet buzzes the Vice City sign, a redesigned Buzzard hunts an airboat through the swamps. Leonida’s Florida-style setting, all islands and wetlands, promises aviation that matters more than ever. Here’s a rundown of everything the trailers already reveal about the skies.

What the trailers already show in the sky

Let’s start with the hard evidence: the footage. The very first aerial shot of the new-generation saga is that white and yellow seaplane flying over a turquoise archipelago, a long causeway bridge below, the Vice City skyline in the distance. Trailer 1 slips in the Dodo, the series’ iconic little single-engine plane, while a big commercial jet crosses the background of Trailer 2. The official screenshots add more GTA V regulars: the Duster crop duster, the Mammatus sightseeing plane and the Shamal business jet. Plenty of returning faces to set the scene.

The best shot of all is probably that private jet swooping low over the giant letters of the Vice City sign at golden hour. An international airport, called Vice City International Airport, can also be glimpsed in several scenes, which makes sense for a metropolis modeled on Miami. Rockstar hasn’t detailed the flight mechanics, but the visual language is clear: here, the sky is part of the map.

The Buzzard chase through the Grassrivers swamps

This is the standout aerial sequence of Trailer 2, at 2:18. A Buzzard Attack Chopper, flown by Jason, chases an Airboat 09 through the Grassrivers, Leonida’s swampy take on the Everglades, while Brian mans the door gun. This Buzzard isn’t a simple copy-paste from GTA V: frame-by-frame analysis points to a side-mounted gun and a fully redesigned cockpit, with a smaller dashboard, visible pedals and a bulkhead sealing off the front from the rear cabin. It’s the kind of detail only a studio obsessed with its models bothers to rework.

The helicopters don’t stop at the Buzzard. There’s a police helicopter, modeled on the Eurocopter EC135, looming over Jason and Lucia’s getaway, and even a speedboat opening fire on it. A news chopper in the style of Weazel News rounds out the picture. Between the swamps, the city and the islands, the air game fits every one of the regions of Leonida.

Flying that feels more tactile than in GTA V

Beyond the aircraft roster, it’s the care put into flight that stands out. In Trailer 2’s low-over-the-water helicopter shot, the rotor wash visibly ripples the surface and flattens the vegetation, an air-displacement effect GTA V never showed this crisply. Paired with the redesigned Buzzard, it hints at an extra simulation layer on the RAGE engine, in line with what Rockstar has done with more realistic driving and vehicle physics.

Nothing is confirmed yet about the flight model itself: stalls, inertia, engine damage. But the attention paid to visible details, lights, rotor wash, cockpits, suggests flying won’t just be a fast-travel mode. We’ll need the first real gameplay demo to know for sure.

The expected aircraft lineup, between returning favorites and a Florida setting

The question is how big the hangar will be. The aircraft identified so far, Dodo, Duster, Mammatus, Shamal, Sea Sparrow, are mostly returning from GTA V and GTA Online, and should be filed under “expected” until Rockstar lists them officially. The real novelty isn’t the list, it’s the geography. With its Keys, islands and swamps, Leonida turns the seaplane and the airboat into front-line vehicles, whereas GTA V’s Los Santos mostly kept planes to the hills of Blaine County. You can even make out a tethered radar aerostat, the kind of surveillance blimp typical of South Florida, floating over the gulf.

This shift toward sea and sky fits into an already rich lineup of GTA VI vehicles and pairs with water exploration, all the way down to scuba diving. The table below sums up what the move from Los Santos to Leonida changes for anything that flies.

What to watch for

Let’s be upfront about the unknowns. The final list of flyable aircraft, the flight model, the presence of smaller airfields and the exact role of aviation in missions are all unconfirmed. All of that should come into focus with upcoming videos, starting with future gameplay demos, ahead of the November 19, 2026 release. In the meantime, one thing is certain: between a reworked Buzzard, seaplanes at the heart of the Leonida map and rotor wash that finally looks believable, Grand Theft Auto VI is already making us want to gain some altitude.

It’s the kind of detail that never makes headlines, but makes a fan feel like another fan built the game. GTA 6 hasn’t finished showing us its skies.

FAQ

Will you be able to fly planes in GTA 6?

Everything points that way. The official trailers already show several aircraft: the Dodo in Trailer 1, a large commercial jet in the background of Trailer 2, a seaplane over the Keys and a private jet flying over the Vice City sign. Other aircraft such as the Duster, the Mammatus and the Shamal appear in the official screenshots. Flying has been a series staple since GTA III, and nothing suggests GTA VI is dropping it. That said, Rockstar has yet to confirm the controls and the full list of flyable planes.

Are there helicopters in GTA 6?

Yes. Trailer 2 features a Buzzard Attack Chopper flown by Jason, chasing an airboat through the swamps while Brian mans the door gun. You can also spot a police helicopter, modeled on the Eurocopter EC135, hovering over Jason and Lucia's getaway, plus a news chopper in the style of Weazel News. Helicopters remain central to GTA gameplay.

Is the GTA 6 Buzzard different from the GTA 5 one?

Yes. According to a frame-by-frame breakdown of Trailer 2, the GTA VI Buzzard gets clear changes compared to its GTA V and GTA Online version: a gun mounted on its side and a fully redesigned cockpit, with a smaller dashboard, visible pedals and a bulkhead separating the front from the rear cabin.

Will GTA 6 aviation be more realistic than GTA 5's?

The early signs say yes. In Trailer 2, the helicopter's rotor wash visibly ripples the water's surface and whips the vegetation, a level of detail GTA V never pushed this far. Add the redesigned Buzzard and the upgraded RAGE engine, and it all suggests a more tactile take on flying. We'll need the first gameplay video to judge the flight model itself.

We're keeping an eye on the tarmac until November 19. Alfred, GTA Zone.
