Why some stores refuse to sell GTA VI

As early as June 24, two independent retailers announced they wouldn’t sell this version. Video Games Plus, a Toronto-area store that’s been around since 1990, put it in black and white: “It is our company policy not to list physical console products that contain only a download code.” The store stresses it has nothing against the game and says it’s ready to sell it the day Rockstar ships an actual disc.

Same refusal from Loot Box Gaming, a Delaware shop that points to “the love of the medium and its preservation.” Both make the same point: a product that doesn’t respect the buyer has no place on their shelves. These stores are tiny next to a Walmart or a Target, and they won’t dent the sales records everyone expects. But their message struck a chord, in a way a giant like GameStop, which stayed silent, did not.

Behind the matter of principle, there are concrete consequences. A disc, you can resell it, lend it, leave it in a closet for ten years and boot it back up without asking anyone. A code tied to your account slams all those doors shut at once. It’s also a red flag for preservation: the day the authentication servers shut down, a game that exists only as a download becomes far more fragile than a pressed disc.

One detail even made the grumbling worse: spotted by Eurogamer, UK listings note that the code only works on an account registered in the United Kingdom. In other words, no importing a cheaper box from another country. That leaves Rockstar’s argument, never stated but obvious: with no disc out in the wild, no copy leaks ahead of time. Rockstar’s response and the disc rumor

Faced with the anger, Rockstar responded, but barely. Players who wrote to support received an email stating that the current preorder is “purely digital” and that they’ll be able to “acquire a physical copy during the following months.” The message never says the word “disc,” could be automated, and stays vague on the date. It is, to date, the studio’s only response.

Meanwhile, the Polish outlet PPE.pl claims a real disc version would arrive in December 2026, citing the insider Graczdari, the first to report the missing disc back in March 2026. His hunch proved right on that point, which lends weight to his new claim without confirming it. Until Rockstar puts out anything official, this disc edition stays in the realm of rumor.
