GTA 6 Cheat Codes: Will They Actually Return?

GTA 6 cheat codes: Rockstar hasn't confirmed any, but every GTA had them. What 30 years of cheats tell us about the GTA VI single-player campaign.

No false promises: as of today, Rockstar hasn’t announced a single cheat code for Grand Theft Auto VI. But the question keeps coming up, and for good reason: since GTA III, punching in a code to rain down weapons or go invincible has been part of the series’ DNA. Here’s what 30 years of homegrown cheating tells us about the odds of finding them again in GTA VI.

Cheat codes, a tradition twenty years in the making

Before online updates and microtransactions, cheating was a solitary pleasure and one nobody apologized for. In Vice City and San Andreas, you’d punch in long button combos on the controller, and a “Cheat Activated” message would confirm it had taken. These codes became iconic: all weapons at once, a full-blown riot, aggressive pedestrians, cars lifting off the asphalt. San Andreas pushed the madness so far that its codes got passed around schoolyards, almost like folklore.

From notepad to smartphone: how the method evolved

The real turning point is GTA IV in 2008. Rockstar dropped the button combos for a more “realistic” system: you dial a number on Niko Bellic’s phone, and the code kicks in right away. Sixteen codes in all, later filed under a dedicated tab on the phone so you could replay them without retyping. GTA V kept the best of both worlds in 2013: the old button combos AND those famous 1-999 numbers, plus the console for the PC version. Invincibility, though, was deliberately capped at five minutes, so the game wouldn’t feel completely hollow.

What GTA VI inherits from its elders

One thing is locked in: GTA VI arrives on November 19, 2026 as a single-player experience on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. And it’s precisely in Story Mode that cheats have always thrived. It’s hard to imagine Rockstar breaking such an ingrained habit, especially since specialist sites are already reporting that the tradition should carry on. The most credible method? The in-game smartphone, already central to the series and everywhere in the GTA VI trailers. One likely safeguard: since GTA V, activating a code cuts off achievements and trophies for the session, without ever corrupting your save.

GTA Online, the great refusal

Where single-player says yes, multiplayer says no, flat-out. GTA Online has never offered a single cheat code: it would be the end of any fairness if a player could turn invincible or spawn a tank in front of everyone else. Rockstar leans on anti-cheat, BattlEye on PC, and bans flagged accounts without a second thought. GTA VI’s upcoming online mode, expected after the single-player, will follow exactly the same logic: cheating will stay a private affair, between you and your saved game.

FAQ

Will there be cheat codes in GTA 6?

Nothing has been confirmed by Rockstar, but it's very likely in single-player: every GTA from GTA III to GTA V offered cheats in Story Mode, and GTA VI launches first as a single-player experience. No codes exist in the series' online modes, however.

How will you enter cheat codes in GTA VI?

We don't know yet, but the most credible lead is the in-game smartphone. Since GTA IV, Rockstar has favored numbers dialed on the character's phone over the old button combos, and GTA V kept both methods.

Will cheat codes work online in GTA VI?

No, by all logic. GTA Online has never allowed codes, relies on anti-cheat (BattlEye on PC) and bans cheaters. GTA VI's upcoming online mode will follow the same principle.

Do cheat codes stop you from completing GTA VI 100%?

Impossible to say for GTA VI. In GTA V, activating a code only disables achievements and trophies for the session: just reload a clean save to re-enable them, with no harm done to your game.
