The Acid Lab is the most profitable business you can run solo in GTA Online: a mobile drug lab hidden inside a truck, free to unlock, never raided, that churns out cash while you do other things. Here’s how to get it, install the upgrade that changes everything, and make it pay off solo.

The most profitable business to run solo

Added on December 13, 2022 with First Dose, the first part of the Los Santos Drug Wars update, the Acid Lab isn’t a fixed property like the Cocaine Lockup or the Bunker: it’s a lab housed inside the MTL Brickade 6x6 truck. You produce acid (a fictional product in the GTA universe) in a vehicle you park wherever you want, safe from public sessions.

Its real strength comes down to three things. The lab is never attacked by other players, unlike warehouses that can be destroyed on you. Everything is done solo, from resupply to selling. And a single delivery bike is enough to move the entire stock, where other businesses demand multiple vehicles and logistics. For a player who’s just starting out in GTA Online or looking to make money efficiently, it’s the ideal entry into the grind.

How to unlock the Acid Lab: the First Dose missions

No upfront purchase to unlock the lab. You need to knock out the six First Dose missions handed to you by Dax, the Fooligans’ leader. This story chain sets up the Freakshop north of the Mirror Park rail yard, introduces you to the crew, and ends with stealing the Brickade 6x6 truck that becomes your lab.

Once the six missions are done, head into the Freakshop and talk to Mutt to install the lab equipment: it costs GTA$750,000, free if you’re a GTA+ member. You can also buy the Brickade already equipped from Warstock Cache & Carry to skip the missions, but the First Dose route stays free and shows you the whole Drug Wars world along the way.

The GTA$250,000 Equipment Upgrade: the real turning point

This is the step too many players skip, and yet it’s the one that makes the business worthwhile. Until you have the Equipment Upgrade, a batch is worth GTA$237,600 for about GTA$45,600 in net profit: barely worth it. With the upgrade, a batch’s value leaps to GTA$335,200, and net profit climbs to around GTA$239,200, nearly 40% more value.

The catch: the upgrade is locked by default. To unlock it, you have to call Dax and complete 10 Fooligan Jobs, those small side missions spaced out by a cooldown of about 48 minutes. So expect several hours of play before you can spend the GTA$250,000. Once the upgrade is installed, also consider the Brickade’s Armor upgrade: it keeps your deliveries safe.

Produce and sell: resupply, cook, and delivery

It works on the classic GTA Online business loop: you resupply with raw materials, the lab turns them into stock, you sell. For resupply, two options. Either you pay Mutt to have the supplies delivered, faster but it eats into your margin. Or you source them yourself by stealing the chemicals and equipment, free and, as a bonus, it speeds up production. For maximum return solo, stealing supplies is still the better call.

Once the stock is full, you start the sale from the truck. The product ships out on the delivery bike that comes with the lab, and a single run is enough to move it all, even alone. Subscriber tip: GTA+ members get a 50% production speed bonus during event periods, enough to fill the stock even faster.

How much per hour, really, and who it’s for

On paper, a full upgraded batch nets about GTA$239,200 in profit if you buy your supplies, more if you grab them for free. Translated into output, you’re looking at around GTA$100,000 an hour in semi-passive play, without thinking about it, while you run races or heists. It’s not the game’s best raw rate, but it’s one of the best time-to-effort ratios for a solo player.

In practice, the Acid Lab is for two kinds of players. The beginner, who has no submarine or arcade and wants steady, risk-free income: the lab checks every box. And the regular player who wants a background business running around the clock, alongside the big scores. On raw output, the Cayo Perico heist solo is still ahead, and the Cluckin’ Bell Farm Raid is faster for a big one-off payout, but none run as quietly in the background. To build a real bankroll, pair it with the most profitable businesses and a well-managed bunker.

And in GTA 6?

The Acid Lab will stay a safe bet for making stress-free money in GTA Online for a long time, especially for newcomers. That leaves the big question of multiplayer with the next installment, Grand Theft Auto VI, on the way: we break down the future of GTA Online after GTA 6 if the topic gets you curious.

FAQ

How do you unlock the Acid Lab in GTA Online?

By completing the six First Dose missions for Dax, the first part of the Los Santos Drug Wars update. They set up the Freakshop, introduce you to the Fooligans, and have you steal the MTL Brickade 6x6 truck. Once the chain is done, talk to Mutt at the Freakshop to install the lab for GTA$750,000, free if you're a GTA+ member.

How much does the Acid Lab and its upgrade cost?

Setting up the lab costs GTA$750,000 (free for GTA+ members). The Equipment Upgrade, essential to make it pay off, costs GTA$250,000, but you first have to complete 10 Fooligan Jobs for Dax before you can buy it.

How much does the Acid Lab make per hour?

Once the Equipment Upgrade is installed, a full batch is worth GTA$335,200, or about GTA$239,200 in net profit if you buy your supplies. Sourcing them yourself for free pushes the margin even higher, for a return often cited at around GTA$100,000 an hour in semi-passive play. Without the upgrade, a batch drops to GTA$237,600, which is exactly why you want to unlock the improvement as fast as possible.

Can the Acid Lab be played entirely solo?

Yes. That's its biggest selling point: production, resupply, and selling can all be done alone, in a private session. The lab is never attacked by other players, and a single delivery bike is enough to move your entire stock. It's the most stress-free business to run without a teammate.

Is the Acid Lab still worth it in GTA 5 in 2026?

Yes. For a solo or new player, it's still one of the best time-to-money ratios in GTA Online: little upfront investment, zero raid risk, and a stock that fills up while you do other things. Veterans with a submarine prefer Cayo Perico for raw output, but no passive business is this accessible.
