In 2026, you can count the most profitable businesses in GTA Online on one hand: the Acid Lab to get started, the Agency for the big checks, the nightclub and the bunker to stack passive income. Here’s which ones actually pay, what they cost, and the order to buy them in.

The golden rule: one active business to produce, passive ones to stack

Thirteen years after GTA Online launched, the in-game economy runs on a system that’s simple to grasp but long to master. On one side, the active businesses, where you trade your playtime for big upfront payouts (the Agency, the Acid Lab when you sell it). On the other, the passive businesses, which produce on their own while you do something else (the nightclub, the bunker). Nine-figure bankrolls don’t pick one: they stack both.

Three habits apply to all of them. Steal your supplies instead of buying them: it takes longer, but it doubles your margin. Sell in a quiet session (a solo public lobby or a low-population one) so a griefer can’t burn your cargo to ashes. And time your big sales around the bonus weeks on the Rockstar Newswire, when certain activities pay double, sometimes even five times as much. For the full playbook, on heists and businesses alike, see our guide to making money in GTA Online and our ranking of the best heists.

Mansions and GTA Online’s last summer

The most recent content is the Mansions (A Safehouse in the Hills) update, released on December 10, 2025, which lets you buy a mansion for the first time and marks the return of Michael De Santa. Watch out for the trap: these properties sell luxury and status, not returns. You buy a mansion once you’re already rich, never to get there. To weigh what actually pays off on the subscription side, our take on GTA+ sorts it out.

The calendar matters too: with Grand Theft Auto VI expected in late 2026, the summer 2026 update will, by any logic, be GTA Online’s last big content drop. All the more reason to build your empire now. And when the new installment lands, the online economy will reset to zero: we break down what happens to the current mode in Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 arrives?. If you’re just getting started, run through our beginner’s guide to GTA Online first.

Now for the ranking, from the best place to start to the most laid-back income stream.

  1. 1

The Acid Lab, the best place to start

Arriving with Los Santos Drug Wars on December 13, 2022, the Acid Lab is a must for any player just starting out. Its secret: you barely have to buy it. Finish the six First Dose missions as the host and you pick up the MTL Brickade 6x6 truck for next to nothing, with the lab set up in the back of that mobile vehicle, so there's no fixed property to maintain. Fully upgraded, a complete batch sells for around $335,000, or over $100,000 an hour once you factor in production. The right approach: kick off a batch, go pull a heist or run something else, then come back to sell when the stock is full. The most accessible and most profitable business for a solo player, with no barrier to entry.

  2. 2

The Agency, the biggest payout for active play

Unlocked by The Contract update on December 15, 2021, the Agency is the cash machine for active players. Start with Dr. Dre's VIP contract, which pays a million dollars the first time and opens up the agency's entire recurring-income system. From there, two faucets: Security Contracts, paying $30,000, $50,000, or $80,000 depending on their intensity (a hard contract wraps up in about fifteen minutes for $80,000, more than $300,000 an hour), and Payphone Hits unlocked by Franklin, which pay $85,000 each when you stick to the requested assassination method. Chain the two together and you clear over $450,000 an hour, while the agency safe builds up passively. The most profitable investment if you play in active sessions.

  3. 3

The Nightclub, the income stream that runs itself

Introduced by After Hours on July 24, 2018, the nightclub is still the best passive income in the game, by a wide margin. Two sources, both automatic. First, the safe: as long as the popularity bar stays full, it generates up to $50,000 per in-game day (48 real minutes) and fills up to $250,000 in four hours. To keep popularity up, swap your DJ now and then ($10,000) or run a promo. Then the warehouse: your technicians quietly siphon from your other businesses (bunker, cocaine lockup, counterfeit cash) and stockpile goods you sell in a single big delivery, no crew needed. It's the ultimate multiplier: the more businesses you own, the harder the nightclub works for you.

  4. 4

The Bunker, the reliable passive standard

Released with Gunrunning on June 13, 2017, the bunker is the all-time classic for passive income, and the cornerstone of the nightclub's warehouse. The idea: it manufactures weapons in the background, which you offload in batches. Fully upgraded in staff and equipment, a complete stock sells for around $1,050,000 outside Blaine County, for a passive return of roughly $78,000 an hour when you steal the supplies instead of buying them. Set it up, start production, and forget about it between activities: it fills its own stock and your club's. Essential the moment you're aiming for a bankroll in the tens of millions.

  5. 5

The Salvage Yard, a million a week without breaking a sweat

The newest of the money-making businesses, arriving with The Chop Shop on December 12, 2023. The yard lets you run three vehicle robberies a week, each one targeting a coveted high-end car somewhere in the state of San Andreas. Every vehicle you sell off pays $260,000 to $405,000 depending on the target, plus a $50,000 bonus per successful robbery, which adds up to nearly $900,000 over the week for a modest upfront investment and a very reasonable amount of playtime. As a bonus, the tow truck brings in some extra income by hauling in abandoned wrecks. Its one drawback: a weekly cap that keeps you from farming it on a loop. Think of it as a steady paycheck to cash in every week, on top of the heavy hitters.

  6. 6

The Cocaine Lockup, king of the biker businesses

The oldest on the list, unlocked by the Bikers update on October 4, 2016, and still the most profitable of the five biker businesses. Fully upgraded, a complete stock sells for $420,000 on a remote delivery (up to more than $525,000 in a public lobby with the high-demand bonus), for around $72,750 an hour. The biker rule: keep your stock below the threshold that triggers multiple sale vehicles, and use it to feed your nightclub warehouse. It's the best way to turn an old business into modern passive income, as long as you have the clubhouse to go with it.

FAQ

What is the most profitable business in GTA Online in 2026?

For solo players, the Acid Lab offers the best balance of accessibility and payout: around $335,000 per full batch, or over $100,000 an hour. For the highest payout in active play, the Agency from The Contract update climbs to nearly $450,000 an hour when you chain Security Contracts and Payphone Hits. The right pick mostly comes down to how much time you plan to put in.

Which business should you buy first?

The Acid Lab. It costs almost nothing (the Brickade 6x6 truck is practically free once you finish the six First Dose missions as the host), runs entirely solo, and bankrolls everything else. After that, a nightclub for passive income, then a bunker to feed the club's warehouse.

Can you run these businesses solo?

Yes, all of them. The Acid Lab, Agency, bunker, nightclub, and Salvage Yard can all be managed entirely on your own. The only real catch is selling in a low-population session, or a solo public lobby, so another player can't blow up your cargo before it's delivered.

Do you need to buy Shark Cards to start a business?

No. Shark Cards (real money) save you time, not the game. You can scrape together enough for your first business in a few evenings of heists, as we lay out in our guide to making money in GTA Online. Better to sink your first earnings into the Acid Lab than into a supercar.
