Released on May 6, 2025, the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 racked up 475 million views in 24 hours, but its real depth is hidden in the backgrounds. Frame by frame, fans have dug up Vice City tributes, bridges over to Red Dead, and technical hints. Here are the 10 details worth knowing.

The most-watched game trailer in history

On May 6, 2025, Rockstar dropped this Trailer 2 right in the middle of a delay announcement. Within 24 hours, it broke the record for the most-watched video game trailer, and its mood track, “Hot Together” by the Pointer Sisters (1986), saw its streams jump by more than 182,000% on Spotify. But the real story is in the detail: every shot is a layer of references, the kind Rockstar has been stacking since the RAGE engine era.

Vice City forgot nothing

Half the finds look back at the series’ past. Tommy Vercetti’s Ocean View Hotel, a rejuvenated gun dealer Phil Cassidy, weapons pulled from a trunk like in the Vice City intro: Rockstar speaks to longtime fans without ever weighing the scene down. The studio even takes the nod as far as recreating the Scarface building, the 1983 film that shaped the city’s entire imagination. For a broader breakdown of the modern city, see our comparison of the original Vice City versus the GTA VI version.

Hints about story, world, and engine

Other details speak to the game ahead. Lucia’s ankle monitor hints at a probation storyline. The Mount Kalaga panther and the wildlife that fills the swamps point to a living world, right in line with Red Dead Redemption 2. And the flood of technical finishing touches, bubbles in the glasses, beard growth, is a reminder that GTA 6 is betting everything on density. What’s left is telling what’s shown apart from what’s assumed: Rockstar hasn’t confirmed a single specific mechanic.

Here, from the deepest cut to the most subtle, are the 10 details fans pulled from Trailer 2.

  1. 1

Phil's Ammu-Nation, the deepest cut of all

A TV ad hypes 'Phil's Ammu-Nation,' fronted by a hulking guy who's a dead ringer for Phil Cassidy, the one-armed gun dealer from the 3D-era games (GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas), right down to his 'more guns than the law allows' pitch. Here he's younger and still has both arms, and the Ammu-Nation chain had never carried a proper name before. Rockstar is clearly tugging on the nostalgia string, even if nothing proves this is the 'real' Phil, since the series' 3D and HD universes are separate.

  2. 2

The Ocean View Hotel and Tommy Vercetti's shirt

In a nighttime shot, Jason hangs out in a botanical-print shirt in front of a hotel that evokes the Ocean View, Tommy Vercetti's hideout in 2002's Vice City. Art Deco facades, pastel neon, the building's silhouette: it's all dialed in to speak to fans of the cult classic. This is the shot used as the banner for this article.

  3. 3

Banknotes stamped with presidents from Red Dead

Freeze the frame and the bills flying around a club carry the faces of Thaddeus Waxman and Franklin Hardin, two fictional presidents already seen on the banknotes in Red Dead Redemption 2. It's confirmation that Rockstar is weaving a coherent universe across its franchises, a running gag fans have been tracking since GTA IV and its shared fake brands.

  4. 4

Weapons pulled from the trunk, just like Tommy and Lance

Jason and Lucia grab their arsenal from a car trunk, a shot that almost perfectly mirrors Tommy and Lance Vance's shootouts in Vice City. The move looks harmless, but for anyone who knows the 3D era, it's a direct tribute to the most iconic duo in the series, and a taste of the Jason and Lucia pairing.

  5. 5

NINE 1 NINE, the club modeled on Miami's E11EVEN

A seaplane tows a banner reading 'Why Sixty Nine when you can Nine 1 Nine?' Behind the juvenile joke, the NINE 1 NINE club is a stand-in for E11EVEN, Miami's famous 24/7 spot. As always, Vice City photographs the real Florida down to the pixel, from signage to clubs to architecture.

  6. 6

    The Scarface building

A building glimpsed in the trailer borrows the lines of the one where Tony Montana takes on the chainsaw killers in Scarface (1983), the foundational film behind the entire Vice City mythos. The circle is complete: the series pays tribute to the work that inspired it, just as it quietly did back in 2002.

  7. 7

Lucia, from the penitentiary to supervised release

The trailer opens on Lucia getting out of prison. A frame-by-frame detail: an electronic ankle monitor, visible early on and then gone later. Some read it as a hint at a map that's restricted at first, probation-zone style, before it fully opens up. The theory is still fan speculation, but it fits the criminal past Rockstar gives Lucia.

  8. 8

    Jason's paratrooper tattoo

In a close-up, one of Jason's tattoos echoes the insignia of U.S. Army airborne troops. Enough to sketch out a military past for this former small-time crook turned hired muscle, in the tradition of the battered, history-scarred protagonists who have filled Rockstar games since Niko Bellic.

  9. 9

Mount Kalaga, an ecosystem that breathes

Beyond the flamingos and alligators already spotted, a panther crosses a shot of Mount Kalaga National Park, one of the six regions of Leonida. The dynamic wildlife, inherited straight from Red Dead Redemption 2 and the RAGE engine, points to a living natural world rather than a simple backdrop.

  10. 10

RAGE fidelity: bubbles, beard, and a PS5 in the ad

The technical details come fast: bubbles rise in the beer glasses, Jason's beard and hair change length from one shot to the next (possibly the return of Red Dead Redemption 2's dynamic growth), and a PS5 sits in the Ammu-Nation ad, an echo of the partnership with Sony. Three markers, three promises of density the engine will have to deliver on.

FAQ

What's the best easter egg in GTA 6 Trailer 2?

The deepest cut is the 'Phil's Ammu-Nation' ad, fronted by a hulking guy who looks like Phil Cassidy, the one-armed gun dealer from the 3D-era games (GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas). Here he's younger and still has both arms, and it's the first time the Ammu-Nation chain has carried a proper name.

What song plays in GTA VI Trailer 2?

'Hot Together' by the Pointer Sisters, a 1986 track. After the trailer dropped, the song's streams exploded by more than 182,000% on Spotify, fueled by the trailer's 475 million views in 24 hours.

Does Trailer 2 have ties to Red Dead Redemption 2?

Yes. Freeze-frame the banknotes flying around a club and you'll catch the names Thaddeus Waxman and Franklin Hardin, two fictional presidents already namechecked in Red Dead Redemption 2. It's one more hint at the shared universe across Rockstar's franchises.

When will GTA 6 Trailer 3 come out?

No official date. Rockstar is expected to kick off its marketing campaign in the summer of 2026; Trailer 3 and pre-orders should follow soon after. We break it all down in our piece on GTA VI Trailer 3.
