They carry one of the biggest cultural hits of the century on their shoulders, and you probably wouldn’t recognize them on the street. Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno and Steven Ogg are the faces, voices and bodies of Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Here’s who they are, how Rockstar found them, and what they’ve been up to since 2013.

A blind casting, courtesy of Rockstar’s secrecy

The detail that says everything about Rockstar’s cult of secrecy: none of the three knew they were auditioning for a GTA game. Tryouts were done with anonymized scenes, and the title was only revealed after the contract was signed. The studio wasn’t looking for stars, it was looking for unknowns who could carry a character for years without overshadowing him with their own image.

The work started as early as 2010, for roughly three and a half years of shooting. And forget the cliché of an actor in a booth behind a microphone: everything was performed. Every cutscene in Grand Theft Auto V is a real scene, captured through performance capture, stunts, fights and walk cycles included. As Ned Luke puts it, everything the characters do on screen, the actors actually did. The dialogue, on the other hand, stayed locked down: no free improvisation, only tweaks approved by the directors.

April 30, 2013: the world meets their characters

Rockstar introduced its trio to the public with three dedicated trailers, all released on the same day. Three minutes were enough to install the depressed bank robber, the ambitious repo man and the Sandy Shores tornado in the video game pantheon, and to launch a game that still tops the charts more than a decade after 2013, with more than 225 million copies sold.

That leaves one question: who’s behind each of them? From the patriarch in therapy to the most famous psychopath in video games, here are the real faces of Los Santos, and what each of them has become. As for the next generation, their names are Jason and Lucia: Rockstar is applying the exact same secrecy playbook to the GTA 6 cast.

  1. 1

Ned Luke, the Michael who came out of retirement

The story is almost too good: just like Michael, Ned Luke had stepped away from the game. After years of commercials and supporting TV roles, he left the business around 2008 and opened a restaurant with his brother. He initially turned down the audition, a video game wasn't exactly his thing, then changed his mind after reading the scenes. The callback was a chemistry test with Steven Ogg: the two tossed their scripts aside and played the argument for real. On set, everything had to be imagined, the De Santa mansion was nothing but a frame of pipes and foam. As for the fans, they figured out his identity fifteen minutes after the first trailer dropped.

Shawn Fonteno, the Franklin blessed by Dr. Dre

Before GTA 5, Shawn Fonteno hadn't acted since The Wash (2001), a comedy headlined by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. It was his friend DJ Pooh, a West Coast rap legend who worked on San Andreas and the game's music, who brought him onto the project. Twelve years after his last role, he became Franklin Clinton, and the only member of the trio to officially reprise his character: in December 2021, GTA Online: The Contract put him back in the spotlight alongside Dr. Dre, running his own agency for Vinewood's elite. In 2023, he even unveiled Franklin's World, an RP server project where he plans to play Franklin on stream. Steven Ogg, the Trevor who went off to conquer Hollywood

Born in Edmonton and raised in Calgary, Steven Ogg was kicking around New York TV shows (Law & Order, Third Watch) before putting acting on hold to build a house. Trevor Philips pulled him back in, and then some: his physical fury, performed body and soul on the capture stage, gave the Sandy Shores psychopath a credibility few video game characters ever reach. Hollywood took notice: he became Simon, Negan's right-hand man in The Walking Dead, then the outlaw Rebus in Westworld. Of the three, he's the one you're most likely to spot on screen today.

  4. 4

Slink Johnson, the Lamar who became a living meme

Special mention for the fourth man. Gerald "Slink" Johnson, a stand-up comedian who landed the title role in the sitcom Black Jesus (Adult Swim, 2014-2019), lends his swagger to Lamar Davis, the best friend Franklin never should have listened to. His signature scene, the legendary roast of Franklin and his haircut, became one of the game's most enduring memes. So much so that Johnson and Fonteno reenacted it in real life, shot for shot, costumes and strut included. Proof that in GTA 5, even a supporting character can steal the show.
