GTA RP is about inhabiting a character with their own story inside a living version of GTA V: cop, mechanic, doctor, bank robber, you pick your role and commit to it. It all plays out on private servers powered by FiveM, free and PC-only. Good news for newcomers: since 2023, the project has moved under Rockstar’s wing. Here’s how to get started on a server the right way, from download to your first character.

GTA RP is roleplay on FiveM servers

FiveM is a multiplayer framework built by Cfx.re. In practice, it lets a community run its own GTA V server, complete with custom rules, jobs, economy, and scripts, entirely separate from official GTA Online. The roleplay layer almost always runs on a dedicated framework, most commonly ESX or QBCore, which handles jobs, money, inventory, and player interactions. That’s what turns the Los Santos map into a genuine social sandbox.

RP is far from niche. In spring 2021, riding that wave, GTA V overtook Just Chatting to become the most-watched category on Twitch, with the English-speaking scene making a major contribution to the surge. More importantly, the legitimacy is now official: in August 2023, Rockstar welcomed Cfx.re (the teams behind FiveM and RedM) into the studio and expanded its mod policy to explicitly include roleplay. In other words, the publisher no longer merely tolerates RP. It embraces it.

What you need before you start

Three requirements, nothing more.

If you’re wondering whether GTA V still holds up in 2026: the game has surpassed 225 million copies sold, a record that explains why its RP scene remains this vibrant thirteen years after launch.

Installing FiveM in minutes

The installation is quick and straightforward.

  1. Head to fivem.net and click Download Client. Avoid third-party sites: there is only one official source.
  2. Run the installer and let it detect your GTA V installation.
  3. Open FiveM and wait through the initial updates.
  4. Click Play, then Servers, and apply the Roleplay filter to find servers near you.

No need to worry about your main account: the client is separate and only contacts Rockstar services to validate your copy. Your GTA Online progress is never affected.

Free Access or Whitelist: picking your first server

Servers fall into two categories.

Free Access (FA) servers require no application: you join and play. This is the ideal training ground for mastering the commands, proximity voice, and basic RP etiquette before aiming higher.

Whitelist (WL) servers require an application (a written form, sometimes a voice interview). In return, you get more serious and consistent roleplay, a balanced economy, and an active staff that enforces the rules. It’s the top tier, but you have to earn your spot.

When choosing a server, look at script stability (a laggy or buggy server kills immersion), economy balance, and staff reputation. One tip: server rankings shift constantly. Rather than trusting a static top list, check live player counts directly in the FiveM browser. A full server at peak hours is worth more than a reputation.

Creating your character and staying in role

RP starts with a believable character: a name, a backstory, a job, a personality, not just a digital version of yourself. Once in-game, a few ground rules separate a good roleplayer from someone the staff will ban quickly.

What about GTA 6?

By bringing Cfx.re in-house, Rockstar has clearly validated the future of roleplay. It’s not hard to imagine RP servers eventually built on the engine and map of GTA 6, far larger than anything Los Santos has to offer. For now, GTA V RP still has plenty of runway ahead. FAQ

What exactly is GTA RP?

It's roleplay: you play a character with their own backstory (cop, mechanic, bank robber, doctor) in a living version of GTA V's world, on a private server run by a community. Everything revolves around proximity voice chat and staying in character, not GTA Online's standard missions.

Is GTA RP free to play?

Yes. The FiveM client is free and the vast majority of servers are open without any payment. You only need a legitimate copy of GTA V on PC: FiveM verifies ownership on first launch. Some communities offer optional donations or cosmetic perks.

Can I play GTA RP on PS5, Xbox, or other consoles?

No. FiveM is PC-only, as it relies on interoperability mechanisms that only exist on that platform. On consoles, you're limited to official GTA Online, with no RP servers.

Will playing on FiveM get me banned from GTA Online?

No. FiveM runs as a separate client that only contacts Rockstar's online services to verify your copy of GTA V on first launch. Playing RP has no connection to your GTA Online account or your official progression.

Free Access or Whitelist: where should I start?

Start with Free Access (FA): you join the server without any application, which is ideal for learning the commands, proximity voice, and RP etiquette. Once you're comfortable, go for a Whitelist (WL) server, more immersive and structured, but requiring an application.
