Modded right, GTA 5 on PC becomes a different game: photorealistic graphics, a police simulator, new missions, an open-air movie studio. The golden rule fits in one sentence: mod single-player, never GTA Online. Here are the must-have mods in 2026, and the two tools to set up before you start.

The golden rule: mod single-player, never online

It’s the one thing to remember before anything else. Rockstar officially tolerates single-player mods: after talks with Take-Two, the publisher confirmed it won’t go after non-commercial projects that respect its intellectual property, and that nobody gets banned for modding their Story Mode. Mess with GTA Online, though (money, cheat menus, unfair advantages), and you still risk a permanent ban.

That tolerance was far from a given: back in 2017, Take-Two sent a cease-and-desist to OpenIV, the game’s most widely used modding tool. The player backlash, led by review bombing and a petition, pushed Rockstar to backpedal and publish a clear policy on single-player mods. The takeaway: only download from trusted platforms like GTA5-Mods or Nexus Mods, and steer clear of shady sites loaded with fake updates.

The two tools to install first

None of the mods in this ranking will run without a small technical foundation. Two tools are non-negotiable, plus a third for scripted mods.

StepToolWhat it does
1OpenIVBrowse and edit the game’s files, install mods cleanly without breaking your installation
2Script Hook VRun .asi mods, the near-universal backbone of the catalog (single-player use only)
3Script Hook V .NETRun mods written in .NET (LSPDFR, Menyoo, and many more)
4A trainerTest things, spawn vehicles, toggle single-player options

Install them in this order, always keep a backup of your original files, and you’ll avoid 90% of the problems. The full step-by-step is in our guide on how to install mods on GTA 5.

Legacy or Enhanced? The real trap of 2026

Since March 4, 2025, GTA 5 has come in two versions on PC: the old one, renamed Legacy, and the new Enhanced edition (free), with ray tracing and next-gen features. For modding, that changes everything: you have to download the Script Hook V build that matches your version exactly, or the game crashes on launch. The core tools now handle both, but most of the catalog was built for Legacy, which remains the easiest to mod until the scene migrates over. If you’re unsure which version to run, our comparison on which version of GTA 5 to buy breaks it down.

The original GTA 5, the foundation mods elevate

Before transforming everything, a useful reminder: the base game is still a solid foundation, and that’s exactly what mods enrich rather than replace. Rockstar’s official gameplay video shows the original Los Santos, its three protagonists and its systems, the canvas the community has been reinventing on PC since 2015.

On to the ranking, from the most spectacular graphics leap to the most advanced creation tools. They all run in single-player, on PC, and each one extends the life of a game that’s already going strong since 2013.

  1. 1

    NaturalVision Evolved, the graphics leap

Illustration of a photorealistic view of the Vinewood hills at dusk, lush vegetation, reflections and cinematic lighting, in the style of a high-end GTA 5 graphics mod

The mod everyone wants to see running. NaturalVision Evolved, made by Razed Mods, is a complete overhaul of the lighting, weather, tonemapping, textures, and even some building models. The result looks like a next-gen demo: Los Santos jumps from 2013 to near-photorealistic visuals. New versions launch in early access on Patreon before going public, and a Lite variant exists for modest PCs. It's demanding, but it's the one mod that justifies playing on PC all on its own.

  2. 2

LSPDFR, GTA 5 from the police side

Illustration of a nighttime police roleplay scene on a Los Santos street, patrol car with lights flashing, an officer pulling over a vehicle, a cinematic mood with no readable logo

What if you played on the right side of the law? LSPDFR (Los Santos Police Department First Response) turns Story Mode into a full-blown patrol simulator: traffic stops, calls, pursuits, dispatch management. It's one of the community's biggest pillars, updated regularly, and the gateway to the whole roleplay universe. It runs on Script Hook V .NET, which you'll need to install first. A mod that adds dozens of hours of play without touching a single story mission.

  3. 3

Menyoo, the creator's Swiss Army knife

The go-to trainer for anyone who wants to build their own scenes. Menyoo lets you spawn vehicles, NPCs, and objects, freeze the time and weather, place props, and save it all. It's the favorite tool of screenshot and machinima makers, paired with the Rockstar Editor. For more basic options (god mode, infinite ammo, teleport), Simple Trainer does a quieter, rock-solid job. Essential the moment you want to create rather than just play along.

  4. 4

More single-player content: heists and missions

Once you've finished Story Mode, you can keep it going. Mods like Single Player Heists add dozens of jobs playable offline, while others bring missions designed for GTA Online back into the campaign. Enough to give fresh direction to a Los Santos you thought you'd wrung dry. These mods rely on Script Hook V and its .NET extensions, and stay strictly single-player: none of these missions belong in official multiplayer.

  5. 5

    VisualV, the accessible graphics facelift

Not everyone has a NASA-grade PC. VisualV is the reasonable alternative to NaturalVision: it cleans up the lighting, skies, fog, and weather effects without bringing a graphics card to its knees. You get a much more modern look for a measured performance cost. It's often the first graphics mod recommended to beginners, before aiming for something heavier. Proof that making GTA 5 look better doesn't necessarily require the latest trendy GPU.

  6. 6

World of Variety, a livelier Los Santos

Thirteen years after its release, GTA 5's single-player can feel empty next to GTA Online. World of Variety fixes that by injecting vehicles, NPCs, and law enforcement pulled from the online updates into Story Mode. The streets get busier, the car pool modernizes, traffic gains variety. A subtle but transformative mod that makes the world feel believable without distorting it.

  7. 7

Map Editor and Rockstar Editor, for creating

GTA 5 is also a movie studio. Guadmaz's Map Editor lets you build your own sets and objects that other mods can then use, while the in-game Rockstar Editor lets you cut real short films with camera angles, slow motion, and a soundtrack. It's the playground of the machinimas that built the GTA community's reputation. The final step, going from player to director.

FAQ

Can you get banned for modding GTA 5?

In single-player, no. Rockstar has confirmed that nobody gets banned for single-player mods, as long as they're non-commercial and respect its intellectual property. Any modification to GTA Online (money, cheats, menus), on the other hand, is penalized up to a permanent ban. The line is clear: mod Story Mode, leave multiplayer alone.

Do mods work on GTA 5 Enhanced?

More and more, yes. Since GTA 5 Enhanced arrived free on PC in March 2025, the core tools (Script Hook V, Script Hook V .NET) have been updated for both versions. The catch: you have to download the build that matches yours. The Legacy version remains the easiest to mod for now, since most of the catalog was built for it.

Do you have to pay for NaturalVision Evolved?

Not necessarily. New versions first launch in early access on Razed Mods' Patreon, then eventually become available publicly and for free. A NaturalVision Lite variant, lighter and without ReShade, also exists for modest setups and for FiveM.

Can you mod GTA 5 on PS5 or Xbox?

No. Modding GTA 5 is PC-only. Consoles are closed platforms: there's no way to install Script Hook V or OpenIV on them. Videos of so-called console mods actually point to online cheat menus, which are illegal and ban-worthy. If modding appeals to you, PC is where it happens.

How are GTA 5 mods related to GTA RP?

GTA RP runs on FiveM, a separate multiplayer mod that creates its own servers without touching your official GTA Online. It's a different branch of modding, but the same culture. To understand the difference, see our guide on getting started with GTA RP on FiveM.

Will we be able to mod GTA 6 someday?

Nothing is confirmed. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series, and the PC version, the only platform where single-player modding is possible, doesn't have a date yet. Historically, Rockstar lets the community mod its single-player games on PC once the version is out. Until then, everything happens on GTA 5.
