It’s the end of an era for GTA 5 multiplayer on PC. alt:V, the community client that powered roleplay servers for nine years, is shutting down. The closure is rolling out in stages and wraps up for good on July 6, 2026. The reason: Take-Two, which has made it crystal clear that FiveM is now the only authorized platform.
And this isn’t a one-off. After RAGE:MP, alt:V is the second major FiveM rival pushed out the door in a matter of months. The takeaway is unambiguous: on PC, modded GTA 5 multiplayer will soon live on FiveM, or nowhere at all.
alt:V Is Shutting Down in Stages Through July 6, 2026
alt:V isn’t vanishing overnight. Its shutdown follows a three-step timeline. Since March 2, 2026, the platform has stopped accepting new community servers and cut off public access to its development kit. On May 4, the public server list went dark, making servers impossible to find for most players. And on July 6, 2026, the lights go out completely: the game client, server kit, and backend infrastructure will all be unplugged for good.
The team chose to guide the transition rather than simply weather it. In its announcement, one of its members, Vadzz, acknowledged that “Rockstar Games and Take-Two have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform,” while thanking the community and giving server owners time to migrate their communities.
| Date | Step | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| March 2, 2026 | No new servers | Public dev kit shut off |
| May 4, 2026 | Server list closed | Public servers become impossible to find |
| July 6, 2026 | Full end of support | Client, kit, and infrastructure unplugged |
Take-Two Locks Down GTA 5 Multiplayer
To understand it, you have to rewind to 2023. That year, Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, turning FiveM into its in-house platform. Ever since, the publisher has been running a crystal-clear playbook: anything that isn’t FiveM has to go. The lever is a Platform License Agreement, the contract that spells out what is and isn’t allowed around the game.
alt:V is just the latest domino to fall. RAGE:MP met the same fate a little earlier, as we covered in our rundown on the RAGE:MP shutdown. And beyond rival clients, Rockstar has also started monetizing modding through the Cfx Marketplace, its official storefront for paid mods. The circle is closing: Rockstar controls the platform, the catalog, and the rules.
What This Changes for Players and Creators
In practical terms, if you played on an alt:V server, you’ll need to switch over to FiveM before July 6. The good news is that FiveM is still free for anyone who owns GTA 5, and it already hosts the overwhelming majority of the scene. To get started, our guide to getting into GTA RP on FiveM is still the best way in, and our FiveM vs. RageMP comparison breaks down the technical differences between clients.
For developers, the loss stings more. alt:V had its die-hard fans, won over by its performance and architecture, and nine years of work are coming to an abrupt stop. Consolidation comes at a cost: less technical diversity, and total dependence on a single player, Rockstar.
GTA 6 in Its Sights
This power grab isn’t landing by accident, just months out from GTA 6. By locking down modded GTA 5 multiplayer and making FiveM its official platform, Rockstar is laying the groundwork for an ecosystem it will control end to end on the next game. Modding and online for GTA VI haven’t been detailed yet, but the direction is unmistakable. The release, for its part, is locked in for November 19, 2026.
So alt:V joins the long list of community projects caught up with by the rights holder. For players, the message is simple: pack your bags for FiveM. For Rockstar, it’s one more piece in a strategy that now reads like an open book.
FAQ
Why is alt:V shutting down?
Because Take-Two demanded it. The publisher made it clear that FiveM, acquired by Rockstar in 2023, is the only authorized platform for modded GTA 5 multiplayer. alt:V, like RAGE:MP before it, doesn't fit within that framework and so it has to shut down.
When is alt:V shutting down?
The shutdown is happening in stages. Since March 2, 2026, alt:V has stopped accepting new servers. On May 4, the public server list closed. Full end of support, with the client and infrastructure going offline, is set for July 6, 2026.
What should I do if I played on an alt:V server?
You'll need to migrate to FiveM before July 6, 2026. FiveM is still free for anyone who owns GTA 5 and already hosts the vast majority of the GTA RP scene. The alt:V team has actually given server owners time to move their communities over.
Is FiveM the only authorized multiplayer client now?
On PC, yes, for all practical purposes. After RAGE:MP and then alt:V, FiveM is the last major modded multiplayer client still standing for GTA 5, and now officially blessed by Rockstar.
