GTA 6 First-Person Mode: Everything We Know

Will GTA 6 have a first-person mode? Rockstar hasn't confirmed it, but GTA V and RDR2 both did: trailer clues and what we actually know.

No, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed a first-person mode for GTA 6. But the studio gave one to GTA V in 2014, then to Red Dead Redemption 2 right at launch: first-person has become a studio signature. Here’s what’s certain, what’s only a hint, and what it would change for Vice City.

Rockstar stays silent on GTA 6’s first-person view

Let’s start with the only thing that’s truly certain: as of today, no official communication mentions a first-person mode in GTA 6. Both trailers, the official site, and the press visuals are entirely in third-person view, the one that keeps the camera over the character’s shoulder. Until Rockstar releases real gameplay footage, the question stays open.

That hasn’t stopped the community from poring over every frame. In Trailer 2, two moments come up again and again: a shot of Jason at the wheel where the camera slides from a tight viewpoint to a wider one, and a highway scene filmed right at windshield level, both hands on the wheel. Enough to fuel hope for a first-person mode, except those framings could just as easily be plain cinematic angles, with no connection to a playable option. That’s the honest status of the topic: a cluster of clues, zero confirmation.

GTA V created the studio’s first-person view in 2014

To gauge the odds, you have to look at Rockstar’s track record, and it’s unambiguous. GTA V launched in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360 in pure third person. It was the next-gen re-release, out November 18, 2014 on PS4 and Xbox One, then on PC in early 2015, that introduced a full first-person mode, more than a year after the original release.

And it was no gimmick. Rockstar had rebuilt part of the game for this viewpoint: FPS-style aiming, a control scheme closer to a traditional shooter, a dedicated cover system, and thousands of new animations layered onto the existing game. You could switch between the two views with a single button press, in single-player as well as GTA Online, and drive, fly, or shoot entirely in first person. That work on the internal rendering carries straight over into the fidelity of GTA 6’s RAGE engine.

Red Dead Redemption 2 made it a launch-day standard

The next game confirmed it wasn’t a one-off. Red Dead Redemption 2, released October 26, 2018, shipped with a full first-person mode on day one, no longer as a late add-on. Rockstar had revealed it in its October 2018 gameplay video: you could switch to first person at any time, except during cutscenes, and experience shootouts, train robberies, and horseback rides at eye level.

So the trajectory is clear. First person grafted on after the fact in GTA V, then built in from the start in RDR2: with each new game, Rockstar pushes the feature one notch further. In that context, it’s hard to imagine GTA 6 walking it back.

What first person would change for Vice City

If the mode returns, immersion is what would benefit most. The Leonida of the trailers is a Florida saturated with detail: Art Deco facades, packed beaches, wildlife everywhere, crowds constantly filming themselves. Seen at eye level, that density takes on a whole new weight. A police raid on Ocean Drive or a night out in Vice Beach doesn’t hit the same over a character’s shoulder as it does from inside the scene.

The second big gain would be driving and flying. GTA V made the cockpit view one of its next-gen selling points, and GTA 6’s vehicles appear to be modeled with carefully detailed interiors. Tearing down a causeway in a convertible or soaring over the hills of Mount Kalaga National Park at sunset, from the driver’s seat, would give a whole new intensity to a world already built for exploration. It’s also an area where raw hardware power matters, as we saw in our PS5 vs. PS5 Pro comparison.

First person vs. third person: the real debate

There’s a nuance the purists know well: even when Rockstar offers first person, third person stays the instinct for a large share of players. GTA V’s Enhanced version, on PS5 and Xbox Series, kept the first-person mode, but many save it for a few specific moments, shootouts or a drive around town, before going back to the classic camera. The series has been built around that over-the-shoulder view since GTA III, and its visual language, its readability in combat, and its sense of staging all depend on it.

So for GTA 6, the stakes aren’t “first person or third person,” but the quality of the option. A mode built for the game from the ground up, rather than grafted on after the fact like in GTA V, would be far cleaner. That’s exactly the leap RDR2 made, and one of the implicit promises of GTA 6’s new gameplay mechanics.

A near-certainty Rockstar hasn’t signed off on yet

In the end, everything points the same way: two games in a row with an increasingly polished first-person view, detailed vehicle interiors, a Leonida designed for immersion. The return of first person in GTA 6 is all but a given for anyone who follows the studio. The one caveat, and it’s a big one, is that Rockstar has made nothing official and shown no playable footage. By November 19, 2026, a future gameplay trailer or a feature breakdown could settle it in a single frame. It’ll be one of the markers of Grand Theft Auto VI’s technical ambition, to weigh later against what the jump from GTA V to GTA VI really changes.

FAQ

Will GTA 6 have a first-person mode?

Rockstar hasn't confirmed it. Nothing in the official messaging mentions a first-person view, and every trailer is in third person. That said, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both offered the mode, so its return in GTA VI is considered very likely, with no guarantee as of today.

When did GTA 5 get its first-person view?

With the next-gen version, released on November 18, 2014 on PS4 and Xbox One, then on PC in early 2015. The game originally launched in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360 without the mode, so first-person arrived more than a year after the original release.

Can you play Red Dead Redemption 2 in first person?

Yes, right from its 2018 launch. Rockstar built in a full first-person mode you could toggle at any time with a button press, outside of cutscenes. That precedent is what makes the feature likely in GTA 6.

Will you be able to drive in first person in GTA 6?

If the mode is there, yes, just like in GTA V, where you could drive, fly, and shoot in first person. But Rockstar hasn't shown any gameplay footage confirming a playable cockpit in GTA 6.

When does GTA 6 come out?

November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced as of today.
